MagSpire

MagSpire for Industry – liquid natural magnetite

MagSpire IS-3903 is micronised natural magnetite (Fe3O4) in liquid, water-based form from IonSpire Materials AS. It is made for industrial applications where magnetite is needed, for example magnetic paints and coatings. MagSpire is tailored to the customer: fineness and properties are specified together with you according to your application, so we do not state fixed technical values. Other examples of applications for magnetite are drilling fluids, heavy concrete and radiation shielding, water treatment and friction materials. These are examples, not a specification. Describe your application and request a quote, and we will find out together whether MagSpire suits it. A sample can be arranged, and testing in your own application is recommended.

Examples: where is magnetite used?

These examples show how magnetite is used in industry in general, with sources. They are not a specification, and our product is not limited to these industries.

  1. Drilling fluids

Magnetite has been researched as a weighting material in drilling muds for high pressure and high temperature.

    Niche / few sources

  2. Fertiliser (micronutrient)

Small amounts of magnetite as an iron source in fertiliser.

    Niche / few sources

  3. Toners and printing inks

Black magnetic iron oxide is used in magnetic toner and as a black pigment in inks, rubber and plastics. Requires very fine, controlled particles.

    Documented use

  4. Catalysts

Magnetite is the precursor of the iron catalyst used in ammonia production. Requires high purity.

    Documented use

  5. Ferrites and electronics

Very pure magnetite can be an iron source for ferrites, but requires very low impurities.

    Niche / few sources

  6. Magnetic paints and coatings

Finely ground magnetite in paints and coatings makes walls, boards and other surfaces receptive to magnets.

    Documented use

  7. Dense medium separation (DMS)

Ground magnetite in water forms a dense suspension that separates materials by density, e.g. in coal washing, mineral processing and recycling. The magnetite is recovered magnetically.

    Well-documented use

  8. Heavyweight and radiation-shielding concrete

Magnetite as heavy aggregate gives high-density concrete, used for radiation shielding in hospitals and nuclear facilities. Mostly coarse fractions are used.

    Well-documented use

  9. Pipeline concrete weight coating

Concrete coatings with magnetite give subsea pipelines negative buoyancy. Here too, mostly coarse fractions are used.

    Well-documented use

  10. Counterweights and dense fillers

High density gives a lot of weight in a small volume, e.g. in counterweights and sound- and vibration-damping composites.
